NRB directs to give 2 percent interest discount to Corona affected debtors

Kathmandu : Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) has directed banks and financial institutions to provide 2 percent discount on interest rates to borrowers in the Corona affected areas.

In a circular issued on Tuesday for commercial banks, development banks and finance companies, the National Bank of Nepal (NBN) has directed to give 2 percent discount in interest for Corona affected areas.

NRB has asked to give discount in the interest rate of the fourth quarter, i.e. May, June and June, on the fixed interest rate till mid-April.

Making public his written statement on the occasion of the 65th anniversary of NRB, Governor Maha Prasad Adhikari had announced to give concession in the interest of the fourth quarter. As per the same announcement, NRB has issued a circular on Tuesday.

But not all debtors will get this facility. According to the NRB, to get this facility, one must have been affected by Corona.

Food industry, trading, LP gas, internet, television, telecommunication, soap and chemical industries will not get this facility.

Similarly, medical shops, operating hydropower companies, tobacco products and liquor industry will also not get this facility, said NRB.

The tourism sector including hotels, restaurants, trekking, aviation and public transport sector and export industries will get this facility, said NRB.

Microfinance institutions that have invested in loans for Corona-affected areas are required to offer a 3 percent interest rebate. NRB has directed to give 3 percent interest discount to microfinance.

NRB has asked to give only 2 percent discount in case of microfinance investing in wholesale loans. The NRB has also stated that the monthly and quarterly installments to be collected by the banks and financial institutions in April and May should be paid by mid-July.

NRB has also instructed not to charge any additional fee or penalty for repaying the loan in mid-July.
