Nijgadh: Youths and students close to the Communist Party of Nepal (CPN) have handed over a memorandum to Nijgadh Municipality Mayor Suresh Khanal on Sunday against a contractor excavating rubble in the Chure area in the name of road construction.

In a memorandum submitted to Mayor Khanal by young students including Madhav Neupane of the youth association and Shyam Krishna Ghimire, coordinator of Akhil, they have demanded an investigation into the illegal excavation work during the lockdown.

Nepalgunj-based Bhairav-Narayan-Gyanesh Nirman JV Company had excavated gravel and sand using 2 excavators and 2 loaders in Khare Khola of Nijgadh Municipality-10 last Tuesday and Wednesday.

Earlier, the IE report prepared and submitted by the municipality in the excavation area was rejected by the District Coordinating Committee. The committee has rejected the report saying that excavation should not be done in Chure Fedi.

Contractor Shiva Prasad Chaulagai said that the company has excavated sand ballast for road construction with the consent of the municipality. Mayor Suresh Khanal, on the other hand, said that he had no information about the excavation in the river. Even though the excavation work has been stopped, the locals have been demanding against those working against the law.

The youths and students have also handed over a memorandum to Inspector Vikas Thapaliya of the Area Police Office Nijgadh and Inspector Ram Kumar Mahat of the Armed Police Base Camp demanding action against the illegal contractor.

Before signing the contract agreement with the road office, the company has started the construction work through illegal excavation. Suman Yogesh, head of the Road Division Office, Hetauda, said that a contract has been approved in the name of the company for the construction of the road but no agreement has been reached.

The company had received a contract approval from the office for the road blacktop at a cost of Rs 55.898 million on April 27.
