Chief District Officers have claimed that there are 1,600 Nepalis in the border area with India in five districts waiting to be repatriated.

This number is the official statistics of Nepalis living in the Indian quarantine bordering six districts. Though the number of Nepalis returning to the border area has been increasing day by day as India has already started train service in the midst of the lockdown, the district officials say that they do not have reliable data.

Nepalis on the verge of returning home are forced to spend their days at the border in an insecure and miserable manner. At some checkpoints, stranded Nepalis have stopped getting good food and clean drinking water. Many Nepalis have started spending and some have started falling ill. Among those stranded at the border are the elderly, children and pregnant women. Nepalis have been brought to the border area by the Indian side and released.

Most of the stranded Nepalis are in Nautanwa. Chief District Officer of Rupandehi, Mahadev Pantha, said that the number of Nepalis who have completed 21 days of stay in nine quarantines is still around one thousand.
