Jeetpur : Thousands of hectares of maize and vegetable fields in Bara have been completely destroyed due to the hailstorm. On Friday night, strong winds and hailstones blew off the roofs of houses in different parts of Bara and completely destroyed maize and vegetable farming.

Raju Kushwaha, a farmer of Bara Jeetpur Simara Sub-Metropolis-8, informed that the maize planted by the farmers was destroyed by the hailstorm. He said that it was planted in 2 bighas and 5 blocks and was completely destroyed by hailstorm.
Stating that it has been around 32-33 in Katha, Kushwaha informed that their investment has sunk. He said that their source of income for the year was depleted after the ripening maize was destroyed while importing the crop.

Ganga Patel, another farmer, said that most of the farmers were planting maize but the maize crop was destroyed by wind and hail. He demanded that the state should provide compensation to the farmers as there was huge damage to maize as well as vegetable fields.

Farmers in Bara, who are struggling to cope with the corona virus, have high hopes for cash crops such as maize and vegetables, but are worried about what to do after they are destroyed.

According to the Agriculture Knowledge Center, Kalaiya, maize is cultivated in 6,000 hectares and vegetables in 5400 hectares in the district every year. Out of which, 70 percent maize and 80 percent vegetable farming have been completely damaged in the district, said Agriculture Extension Officer at Agriculture Knowledge Center, Kalaiya, Ram Jivan Thakur.

Hurricanes and hailstorms also blew off the roofs of houses in various parts of Bara, knocking down trees and dozens of electricity poles. Ward Chairperson of Jeetpur Simara Sub-Metropolitan Ward No. 19 Sudhan Das Tatma has informed that the house in Rautaha has been more affected due to the hailstorm.
